PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

"Advancing PNAH's Future Through the PRISM of PNAA"

Good Evening...I welcome you all tonight and thank you for making it to the PNA Hawaii 5th Installation of Officers and banquet. To my family, especially my wife, thank you for being so understandings for my shortcomings, your perseverance and guidance.

Distinguished guests, my fellow PNA Hawaii members, my friends, relatives, ladies and gentlemen.

Tonight, conferred by your hope, and with a profound understanding of the responsibility, I accept the duty as the president of the Philippine Nurses Association Hawaii.

I could not believe that in two years I will be directing this organization into a path of destiny, may it be rough or smooth, but the rudder is set and I am challenge by you, the PNAA, by local organizations and specially the members of this organization…… and in the end be evaluated of the outcome of my leadership. See, this is just like us, nurses at work, doing our job and doing the Nursing Process.

I am very proud of our organization tonight. I can see an organization united and invigorated with positive attitudes for unraveling and maintaining support to our community or other community that needed our assistance. An organization prepared to build a new harmonious relationship with other organization who shares a community of values personified in these words: family, work, neighborhood, respect and sacrifice.

More than anything else, I want to carry a message from our membership to other local organizations who are members of this community of mutual ideals that this organization wanted to continue the spirit and sense of purpose in this community. I believe that the fundamental principle and confidence of an organization relies on the tenacity of its members.

But, how will I induce you to become a member of an organization? I know you will ask yourself, why do I have to make an effort to help others with the fact that I do not have much time for myself? Money will not give you comfort always; it is your passions and desires to help others that will give you peace of mind and remember this, you are lucky to have this comfort zone while other’s striving.

For some of us who came to America with a dream to fulfill, from your chosen careers, you have fulfilled those dreams; you became what you are now today, but what about those people who came with the same dreams like us and are being deprived of a life like yours because of their illnesses and needs?

Looking back at the theme of tonight’s affair is a part of Leo Jurado’s mantra for his 2 years at the helm of PNAA, but how will I achieve it locally?

What a challenge! That is the first thing that came to my mind as I sat down to write my speech. Then, I thought, how is this challenge different from any other that I have had? I think as nurses, we all love challenges. How we deal with that challenge is what makes us different. Today, there are multiple challenges in the workplace regardless of where you work, be it academia, a hospital setting, a long-term care facility, or being a member of an association like ours. I thought back to my very first patient in nursing school. I remember wondering how I was ever going to get through the day and not harm my patient. How was I going to remember all the things I needed to do for my patient and survive the day? Somehow I did. My patient lived and so did I. Nevertheless, the challenges in the workplace that many of us face today are many and different.

Tonight, I will introduce to you 5 people, a role models and whom I admired most for their contribution to the community and to give us an example and insight what a community based activist have to be. These are 5 members and advisers of this organization that sacrifices their own lives to make other lives better.

One of them is not a Filipino, not by any means, but with Anne’s research study about Filipino’s Kalusugan ay Kayamanan”, we can find a cure and prevention or an intervention to find a solution before the problem escalates. Tony on one hand is on the other side of the health spectrum. He gave his time and efforts to look for donors and help those who have an end stage of their illnesses to become better. So I ask you to volunteer for them,… to bring this news, to spread the news to your family and friends, to your community, as well as to your church.

With the founding of a non-profit organization, nurses advocate and mentors, Inc. (NAMI), Bea has given a life line to those nursing student who may not afford to pay for NCLEX review class or those Filipino nurses wanting to pass the nursing board examination. So, anyone of you who are here tonight,… maybe able to give your time to teach…. is a big help for Bea. Everyone in this community knew who is Nick. He is a very low profile person but has deep commitments to help others. He helped Filipino veterans that are pursuing for years what was deprive to them by the United States. And last but not the least, is a woman, a new to the Hawaiian arena but a fighter. Her advocacy to patient safety, and wellness is a benchmark for healthcare setting and community alike, and I considered Lilia a part of these community activists. Her slogan is change…change…change. Luckily we found her before President Obama. Ladies and gentlemen, it is with great pride and honor for me to introduce to you these people. Dr. Anne Leake, Mr. Tony Sayagadoro, Miss Bea Ramos-Razon, Mr. Nic Musico and Mrs. Lilia Laureano, Please give them a round of applause.

In closing,…….I also want to give thanks to the former presidents of this organization, to the auxiliary group and advisers for their unyielding support and guidance. Organizations are not operated successful by accident. It takes careful thought and planning to excel. It takes courage and determination from these persons that guided and motivated its members to make this organization viable, vital and visible to the community. How they continually managed the organization superbly is by far the product of their sacrifices and leadership. There is no value I can provide to give them thanks.

Will this speech has the sincerity for you to make a commitment? It is up to you to reconsider, and this challenge is yours to keep. Please, please join us in this community workshop we call.Thank you and May GOD bless us always.

Mahalo,
