History

Brief History

     With spirited planning and hard work of Filipino nurses (the pioneers) and a strong support from the former Philippine Nurses Association of America (PNAA), president Pete Calixto, and with the help and assistance from other PNAA chapter members, the PNAA enacted the inception of this association. On November 24, 2000, the Philippine Nurses Association Hawaii (PNAH) was born as the 32nd PNAA, Inc. chapter member and installed its first president, Tina Salvador.

Achievements

Host to the 25th Philippine Nurses Association National Convention on July 2004. Host to the PNA (Phils.) and PNA of America 5th International Nursing conference as part of the 100 years centennial celebration of the 1st filipino migrant workers in Hawaii (the Sakadas) last January 2006.Participant and partner to the "Para sa Diabetes" and "Health is Wealth", University of Hawaii community based participatory research projects (ongoing),and to the yearly American Cancer Society relay for life. Supporter to the NAMI (Nurses Advocates and Mentors, Inc)a non-profit organization that provides a free NCLEX review class on the Island, the National Kidney Foundation, MOTTEF, AANCART, Member, Hawaii Community Scholarship Foundation since 2002, volunteer to the Medical Reserve Corps “Immunization School Drive”, volunteer to the annual health fair at Leeward Community College, Provider of inservices seminars to Foster and Care Homes Operators in Hawaii funded by Western Union, and to the Bantay Bata Foundation. A donor to the Filcom Center in Waipahu.

Mission

To widen the American-Filipino nurses in Hawaii global perspective by providing link through which they could communicate and promote fellowship with nurses from the mainland US, the Philippine and other places, and if called for, to join forces in enhancing and uplifting the well being of Filipino nurses.

Goals

Promote activities that encourages and support positive professional image through personal growth and development while at the same time keeping alive our cultural identity as Filipinos.
To develop, cooperate ad collaborate with local, national, international and othr professional organization and agencies to provide a venue in Hawaii for Filipino nurses supporting ffor educational programs and advancements relevant to nursing practice, education and research.
Influence local and national legislation and public policies through cumulative force on issues which directly affect nurses, the Filipinos nurses in particular, and also the Filipino community as a whole.
Actively participate in community programs that foster health awareness, promotion and education.
Work together with international organization (such as: PNA, Phils. and its chapter members), local organization and agencies, the PNAA, Inc., to facilitate and promote professional and cultural adjustment of Filipinos and filipino-American nurses worldwide.
To support and provide funds for educational purposes to recently arrived Filipino nurses and local graduates who are undertaking a free NCLEX review cclass with NAMI (Nurse Advocates and Mentors, Inc).
